Since 1948, the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence (Aix-en-Provence Festival) in Bouches-du-Rhône has been a not to be missed event for the 80,000 opera fans that attend each year throughout the month of July.
Well-known for its calissons, small sweets made with almonds and candied melon, Aix-en-Provence is also famous for its international opera festival. Every summer, this city in the southeast of France, around thirty kilometres from Marseille, sees its streets vibrate to the sound of great songs of the opera and classical music from Ravel, Rossini, Stravinsky and especially Mozart, who, since the creation of the festival in 1948, has been a major part of the programme.
With its grand staircase, medieval arches and 17th century wings closing in on an almost square space, the Cour de l’Ancien Archevêché (court of the old Archbishopric) is a jewel of Aix’s heritage, one of the most evocative of the old city’s past. Transformed into a theatre one evening in 1948, it became the emblematic venue of the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. Since 2007, two new venues have hosted performances: the Grand Théâtre de Provence since 2007 and the Théâtre du Jeu de Paume since 2009. Smaller places throughout the city also put on shows.
Until 1997, independent workshops were entrusted with making the sets and costumes, while rehearsals took place in makeshift venues, halls and gymnasiums temporarily made available for the festival. Since then, the festival has had its own teams and facilities, which allow the artists to benefit from better working conditions and have total control of the production.
